چکیده

We examined the role of stimulus variability in learning non-native phonetic contrasts (suprasegmentals) for word identification by adults, considering whether all learners benefit from high-variability training. Forty-seven English-speakers were trained to use Mandarin lexical tones to identify 18 English pseudowords with stimuli produced by either four talkers (multitalker training) or only one of the four talkers (single-talker training). Subjects’ pre-training ability to identify the pitch patterns in a non-lexical context was also measured. Subjects with high pitch-identification ability learned more successfully than those with lower pitchidentification ability. Importantly, multi-talker training was beneficial only for learners with high pitch-identification ability, whereas learners with low pitch-identification ability benefited more from single-talker training. These findings provide support for phonetic-phonology continuity in adult sound-to-word learning and suggest that in order for high-variability training to be beneficial, learners first need to be able to successfully encode phonetic details.

Individual variability in cue-weighting and lexical tone learning.

Speech sound patterns can be discerned using multiple acoustic cues. The relative weighting of these cues is known to be language-specific. Speech-sound training in adults induces changes in cue-weighting such that relevant acoustic cues are emphasized. In the current study, the extent to which individual variability in cue weighting contributes to differential success in learning to use foreig...

Perception of L2 Tones: L1 Lexical Tone Experience May Not Help

This study investigates whether adult L2 learners’ experience with lexical tones and pitch accent in their first language facilitates the acquisition of L2 lexical tones. Three groups of beginning learners of Mandarin with different L1 prosodic experience: native Hmong (a tone language), native Japanese (a pitch and accent language), and native English (a non-tone, non-pitch accent language) sp...

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...

Native Prosodic Systems and Learning Experience Shape Production of Non- native Tones

This study investigates how native prosodic systems and second language (L2) learning experience shape non-native tone production. Speakers from tone language backgrounds (native Cantonese and Mandarin speakers [CS & MS]) and non-tone language backgrounds (English monolinguals [ES] and English speakers with Mandarin learning experience [EM]) produced the six Cantonese tones in an imitation task...

Learning pitch patterns in lexical identification by native English-speaking adults

The current study investigates the learning of nonnative suprasegmental patterns for word identification. Native English-speaking adults learned to use suprasegmentals (pitch patterns) to identify a vocabulary of six English pseudosyllables superimposed with three pitch patterns (18 words). Successful learning of the vocabulary necessarily entailed learning to use pitch patterns in words. Two m...
